5 Common AC Issues

AC Repair Over the years, our Belleville team has seen, diagnosed, and repaired a lot of air conditioning units. While more complex systems are likely to have more complex problems, a lot of the most common problems homeowners and residents have are similar. Knowing how to recognize the most common of AC units can help you fix issues when they first start or, if you need to call in a professional, can give you a better idea of what the resolution is going to entail. The following is a quick look at 5 of the most common AC issues we see in Belleville:

1. Broken Thermostat

You might be surprised by how often we get to a client’s house and see that the only thing needing to be replaced are the batteries in their system’s thermostat! Thermostats are key aspects of your cooling system as they tell your system when to turn on and off. If it’s not the batteries that are an issue, there’s likely an issue with the sensor.

2. Constant Turning On and Off

There are a couple reasons why a cooling system might cycle on and off. If it’s always done this, then the issue is likely that the system is too big for your house. But if this a new thing, then the problem is likely electrical such as a bad power source, loose wiring, or broken connections.

3. Blowing Warm Air

Having an air conditioner that only blows warm air can be especially frustrating. While this is one of the most common issues we see, there are several different things that can be causing it such as a refrigerant leak, broken compressor, or a broken breaker. A professional HVAC technician will best be able to diagnose the root problem to get the cooling system blowing cool air once again.

4. Frozen Unit

If you come home to an air conditioner frozen over, don’t panic! What’s freezing here is the evaporator coil due to condensation and the fix can be easy as turning the system off and allowing the ice to melt or otherwise be removed. In an hour or so, you should be good to go! If this doesn’t resolve it though, call in for a more thorough inspection.

5. Loud Noises

Every air conditioner will make some sort of noise, even those marketed as being quiet units. However, if this is a new occurrence or your AC is much louder than normal then it’s time for an HVAC maintenance visit. Loud noises are generally signs of something caught in the ductwork, vents, or fans.
