Duct Cleaning: Scam or Worth It?

Have you ever wondered why some companies offer duct cleaning services for $40-$50 when others are charging much more? The answer is very simple; it’s most likely a scam!  For quite some time well know companies have been advertising in the newspaper, via Groupon and other means of advertisements all promising an affordable solution to dust, mold and allergens in your home. This problem with companies offering duct cleaning services has become a known issue, so much that Dateline took a closer look inside at how these businesses are ripping off people year after year

Here’s What To Look For:
Bait & Switch: Many companies use the ol’ bait and switch tactic.  They’ll advertise a low cost duct cleaning service, but when they visit your home to perform the service they’ll end up finding some kind of “serious issue” that they’ll need to “address immediately”.  This sudden issue will instantly begin the process of racking up your bill!  Your $40-$50 bill will soon increase to a very un-affordable bill.
Mold Scam: Another good indicator of a scamming company is a mold scam.  They’ll do their best to scare the homeowner into thinking there is a serious mold issue.  If a company is adamant about having a “mold issue” immediately addressed for the safety of your family this is a red flag! Yes, mold can be a problem and can grow in your ductwork; however, how the employee goes about telling you about the issue can help you read the situation.
Beware: While some companies will first advertise low priced duct cleaning services then upcharge you, there are some companies that what you pay for is what you get.  They’ll offer very low priced duct cleaning services then come to your home and only scratch the surface of what should’ve actually be completed.

Here’s What You Can Do:
Get references
: A good place to start is the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and other online review services.  Also, check to see if there are any complaints against the company. Check out BELOMAN’s Better Business Bureau profile here.
Call the company: Contact the company and ask to speak to someone specifically knowledgeable in duct cleaning.  This representative should be able to fill you in on their company’s credibility and put you at ease to the requested service being performed at your home.  When you call BELOMAN you are able to speak with an indoor air quality (IAQ) expert who will make a free evaluation and visit to your home to ensure that your ductwork does indeed need serviced!

A legitimate company that will provide duct cleaning services will not possibly be able to offer the full service for a mind-blowing low price that scamming companies will advertise.
