Minerals, Dirt and Rubber, Oh My!

B.96 Impurities in Tap Water

Have you recently gone to retrieve an ice cold glass of tap water only to find unwanted specks floating? This can be very unpleasant as well as unhealthy to drink!  Because of the potential problems, it’s important to correct the problem at hand.  Fortunately, there are ways to track down the source of the impurities in your household plumbing and prevent most of them.

Dirty Water: if you are finding dirt or sand in your glass it is usually an indicator that there is a water main break somewhere in the public water supply and should be addressed by your water department.

Carbon from the Filter: if the specks you are seeing are not due to a water main break, it would be coming from within your water filter.  Foreign floaties may be present if the filter breaks down or if you have a filter that needs to be replaced or repaired.

Some Metal with your Drink: bits of black specks floating in your water could be from a metal mineral.  It turns out that water in certain areas of the country can contain bits of iron or manganese.  The good news is these minerals do not pose a health hazard; however, the bad news is that it can make the water taste odd or leave stains on clothing and dishes.

Bits of Rubber: at times bits of rubber from various parts of your household plumbing can start to disintegrate and send unwanted particles into the pipes.  Often times this happens because the water has been treated with chlorine which is known to break down rubber piping over time.  In this case, it’s probably a good idea to have a plumber come check it out before further damage is done.

Rust Particles: although small amounts of rust aren’t necessarily dangerous to your health, this could be a good sign that your pipes are corroding.  In order to clear rust from your tap water you should contact a trusted plumber for additional help.
