How to Handle Common Plumbing Emergencies
When an emergency strikes it’s human nature to panic and stress out; however, it’s much better to remain calm in order to remember what to do in that specific situation. When it comes to your plumbing things can get messy pretty fast! To avoid out of control mayhem it’s a great idea to know what to do in several common plumbing issue situations. For each of the below situations the first step is always REMAIN CALM!
My toilet is clogged and overflowing!
- Step 1: Grab the plunger! Check out our recent blog for the proper plunging technique.
- Step 2: Use a plumbing snake: to us it spin the long flexible wire into the drain to snag the clog & pull it out.
- Step 3: if the first two steps did not fix the problem, it may be time to perform major surgery! You may need to pull the toilet up which would require turning off the water supply
My pipes bursted!
- Step 1: find a bucket to collect water coming from the busted pipe.
- Step 2: shut off the water
- Step 3:remove as much water you can with a sump pump or wet-dry vacuum.
- Step 4: cut out the damaged section of pipe and add a replacement section.
My Sump pump is not working!
- Step 1: a common issue causing sump pumps to fail is an unplugged outlet or circuit breaker—check both before moving on to step 2.
- Step 2: check for debris clogging up the sump pit and remove any you find.
Step 3: check the check valve to see if it is broken or nonexistent.
I smell a horrible odor and see mold!
- Step 1: do your best to find the source of the smell
- Step 2: let odor reducing agents such as white vinegar and baking soda sit for 10 minutes in the source then rinse.
- Step 3: check if the cleaning agent reduced the odor and if not there may be an issue with a larger component of your plumbing.
Help! There’s sewage backing up!
- Step 1: recognize that this can be a hazardous plumbing issue and should be controlled by a professionally trained plumber.
- Step 2: grab your phone to call your Metro East superhero, the BEL- O Man!
