Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your HVAC System
HVAC maintenance is something that you need to schedule for your system twice a year. Once in the fall for your heating system and a second time in the spring for your cooling system. To keep your HVAC system in optimal shape, we decided to create a checklist pertaining to your HVAC system that you should take care of this spring.
1. Change Your Air Filters
When air filters are full of dust and debris, they block the airflow and keep fresh air from entering your living space. The air conditioning unit needs to work much harder to circulate the air, which reduces the efficiency of the unit.
Keeping the air quality clean in your home is essential, so you will need to change these air filters every three months. This will keep the levels of allergens and dust down in your home. Old dust and debris can lead to mold, so make sure to clean the filters frequently between changing them for optimal performance.
2. Have Your Ducts Cleaned
Similar to how dust and debris can cause trouble for your air filters, it can also cause similar problems within your ducts. As your HVAC pushes air throughout the ducts, dust and debris will settle in your home. This layer of material can accumulate until it is more than a quarter-inch thick. Meanwhile, the top layers can end up recirculating into your indoor air.
For this reason, it’s critical to have your ducts cleaned every three to five years in the spring. This will protect your indoor air because our team will clean the entire inner surface of your ducts. This will improve indoor air quality, and it’ll prevent dust from entering your vents, which inhibits airflow.
3. Get a Professional to Check Refrigerant Levels
The refrigerant is what the system uses to cool your living space. If there is not enough refrigerant in the system, it could blow warm air from the vents. During the spring, you will want a professional to make sure there is enough refrigerant in your system for the next season. A technician will determine if there is a leak in the system causing you to lose refrigerant.
4. Check for Air Leaks
When there are leaks present in your ducts, your cooling system will be less effective because the cool air can escape. These leaks could surface due to crevice cracks or an unlevel foundation. One way to make sure that your ducts are not leaking is to upgrade them by having a technician add insulation to the ducts. Not only will this make you more comfortable in the summer, but it will also save you money on energy bills because your HVAC system will be more efficient.
5. Make Sure Airflow Is Optimal
Over the course of winter, various items can end up near your vents or dampers, which will hamper airflow. These items are often small, but they’ll have a big impact on how well your system cools and heats your home, and they can even pose a danger. During your spring cleaning regimen, just make sure to clear around the exterior of your HVAC system. This ensures that there are no airflow issues when the seasons change.
6. Have Your Thermostat Checked
The thermostat is one of the most critical components of your HVAC system. With it, you can set the temperature in your home depending on the season. With a zoned system, you can even set the temperature within each room of your home. For this reason, it’s critical that you have your thermostat checked before any issues pop up; the last thing you want is for it to fail during a heat wave.
Our technicians will inspect the unit, making sure that the wiring hasn’t become loose. They’ll also check the display to ensure the temperature reading is accurate by comparing it to their own thermometer’s temperature readings. They’ll also test the responsiveness of the thermostat when inputting new temperature changes.
