Why Is My Water Heater Leaking?

A leaking water heater can be very alarming!  You may begin to panic and worry that a large bill is in your future; however, with help from a local and trusted plumber the problem can be quickly resolved.  With any repair to our larger investments it is best to leave it to the professionals to asses the situation.

Over time minerals can build up and calcify creating deposits inside the tank.  If it builds up too much it can break the lining and cause the water heater to leak.  Another reason your water heater may be leaking deals with the expansion of heated water.  When water is heated it expands and can also cause damage to the lining inside the tank from the stress of water expanding when heated.  Once the lining of the water heater is damaged this is most likely the culprit of the leakage you are experiencing.  Once a leak has been determined there are different steps to take depending if it is a gas water heater or an electric water heater.  If you are experiencing your water heater leaking it’s best to contact your local and trusted plumber for the best advice or to schedule your next service visit.  At the time of service the plumber may need to drain your tank to avoid a bigger mess.
