Winterproofing your Air Conditioner- What you need to know
It’s officially September and you know what that means? There’s a slight chill in the air in the mornings and pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks. We still have at least a few weeks (hopefully…you never know with Belleville weather though…) of hot days before we’ll have to think about switching from the air conditioner to the furnace. When that time does stumble upon us, your air conditioner will have to be prepared for the winter, much like Spartans prepared for war. Okay, so the process isn’t quite that intense, but you get the picture.
1. Turn off power to the unit to keep it from randomly flipping on some 80 degree day in January (in the Midwest, it could happen!). Not every air conditioner is made the same, so read your instructional manual to learn how.
2. Clean the outside of your unit and around it to get rid of the leaves, bird droppings, bugs and dirt that have built up.
3. Cover your unit. You can purchase air conditioner covers at any home improvement store for fairly cheap. You can use bungee cords to secure it in place, if you’d like. This will keep your unit clean and snow free throughout the off season.
4. Regularly check your air conditioner throughout the winter and clear off any ice, snow, or other debris that accumulates on and around your unit.
